Every automobile has its own VIN code, or Vehicle Identification Number. It is a combination of 17 digits and letters that can be likened to a person’s unique fingerprint. The code helps reveal important details about the car as well as track vehicle history by conducting a VIN Lookup. Automakers are obliged to follow an international standard when it comes to VIN coding. It means they should provide information concerning vehicles, for instance, their country of origin, specifications, engine size, model year, type, manufacturing plant, and trim level. Beyond that, government databases track theft records and title brands, as well as service or recall records and vehicle accident history that are often tied to any VIN and can be revealed by using a VIN decoder.
How is a VIN organized?
- There are different groups that comprise a VIN, broken down as follows.
- The first three characters are known as a WMI – or world manufacturer identifiers.
-The first symbols indicate the country of origin. For example, automobiles that were manufactured in the USA start with 1, 4, or 5. Instead, the vehicle identification number for German-made cars begins with W, and so forth.
-The second character displays details about the manufacturer. Often, this symbol is the first letter of the automaker’s name, i.e., A for Audi, B for BMW, etc. This is not always the case, and it depends on the next character.
-The third symbol, together with the first two, indicates the vehicle’s type or manufacturing division.
The following six characters refer to key features and specifications of the vehicle. This VIN part is called the Vehicle Description Section (VDS).
-Positions 4 through 8 provide details like the vehicle base model, body type, transmission, and engine information.
-The 9th character is what’s known as a “check digit” which is used specifically to detect VIN fraud.
- The last eight VIN code positions, from the 10th to the 17th, encrypt the characteristics, particularly specs and features, of a specific automobile. This part is also known as Vehicle Indicator Section (VIS).
- The 10th symbol represents the model year. Letters B through Y indicate the various vehicle configuration years from 1981 to 2000. However, there are some exceptions: I, O, Q, U, or Z characters do not appear in the VIN code. Numbers 1 through 9 were used to indicate the years 2001–2009. Starting in 2010, the characters started over at A and will continue to do so until 2030.
- The 11th character shows which plant assembled the vehicle, with every automaker having their own set of codes.
- Positions 12 through 17 are a production sequence, assigned on the assembly line by the manufacturer.
VIN FAQS
Can I run a free VIN check?
- Yes, but the vehicle details you will receive are limited. To access data like accident history, odometer readings with mileage, and title brands, you have to pay. In this case, you will get a comprehensive VIN lookup and vehicle history report that pulls information from multiple government agencies.
Can I look up vehicle specs by the VIN?
- Yes, certain VIN lookup solutions offer a VIN decoder which reveals automobile specs by VIN number. Alternatively, you can take advantage of Window Sticker Tool to obtain an original window sticker by VIN with a car specs checkup including exact trim level, factory installed options, safety ratings, pricing. The main concern here is that such resources cannot provide you with a comprehensive vehicle history review like we do at ClearVIN. Instead, they offer just automobile characteristics, safety features and general details.
Where can I find a VIN?
- As a rule, the VIN code on a car is located in the lower-left hand corner of the dashboard, on the door jamb, or on the engine block. Motorcycles have a Vehicle Identification Number stamped onto their frames.
Can I determine a vehicle’s price through its VIN?
- While there are a lot of details held within a VIN code, a VIN lookup will not give you a flat-out suggested price for a vehicle. However, the information provided can help you make an informed decision when buying a used vehicle. Used car dealers are advised to sign up for dealer vin lookup to detailed car valuation info along with VIN history at deep discount.
When did VINs become standard?
- The VIN code was first used in 1954. Later, in 1981, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration decided to standardize the Vehicle Identification Number, and today we know it as a 17-character combination of numbers and letters for automobile identification and VIN lookup. Prior to 1981, car manufacturers had their own VIN systems. That is why it is still difficult to find a comprehensive vehicle history report or automobile features review for cars dating back to 1981 and before.
